Half Sovereign Review

1915 Half Sovereign
Half Sovereigns recently have been minted for collectors but 100 years ago they were in common use as payment or wages.
Henry VIII was the first monarch to mint the half sovereign in 1554.
Then it was valued at 10 shillings which was a large sum then.
The Half sovereign has also been used as a commemorative coin for coronations of various monarchs.
It was also a commonly used coin in Australia until the early 1930s.
The usual one that you may come across will probably feature a delightful design by
Benedetto Pistrucci of St George fighting the Dragon..
Recent Half Sovereigns weigh 3.7 grammes and are 22 carat gold.
