In 1896 Queen Victoria became the longest reigning Monarch in English History.
This event was put off at her request until 1897 to coincide with her Diamond Jubilee.
The Diamond Jubilee Celebrations included a huge procession and visits by Prime Ministers of colonies and dominions.
There were in addition troops from all parts of the British Empire and soldiers sent by Indian Princes and Chiefs as a mark of respect for the Empress of India.
A New Gold Sovereign was minted with a more matronly veiled Head portrait.
