On June the 20th, Queen Victoria marked the fiftieth year of her reign.
Unknown to her a group of assassins also planned to make it the end of her reign by trying to blow her up in Westminster Abbey during a service of Thanksgiving.
This assassination would have killed Queen Victoria and half of the British Cabinet.
It was said at the time to have been organised by Francis Millen of Clan na Gael, however he later turned out to be a spy for the British authorities and the whole plot was hatched to discredit the Fenians.
Millen was allowed to escape to the USA where he died in mysterious circumstances.
The Plot was fortunately foiled and the Queen lived to reign for many more years.
A Banquet was held at which 40 European Princes and Kings attended.
The following day the Queen took part in a huge procession to commemorate her jubilee.
