King George VI Sovereign Guide
King George VI was born in 1895.
His older Brother Edward had actually ascended the throne and had abdicated so that he could marry Mrs Wallis Simpson who had been married twice before.
King George had already served in the British Royal Navy in World War I and had married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.
They had two daughters, Elizabeth (now HM Queen Elizabeth) and Margaret Princess Margaret).
After his accession the Irish Parliament removed the power of the Monarch in Ireland.
George ascended the throne as the third Monarch of the House of Windsor.
His Coronation was on 12th May 193 but he did not have a Durbar as he considered that this would be a burden on the Government of India.
Then came World War Two with all its terrible consequences.
George was a shy man and had a speech impediment which further emphasised that impediment.
His Stammer was kept under control after therapy with Australian Lionel Logue.
The King and Queen toured Britain during the War to boost the Moral of the people.
Southern Ireland declared itself o be a Republic and India and Pakistan became independent
Dominions and King George was no longer King of either Ireland nor of India.
His Funeral was on February 15th 1952.
His coins included a South African Sovereign and Half Sovereign and a Canadian
Sovereign from the Ottawa Mint.
A 1947 Issue from the Ottawa mint featured a Maple Leaf set of coins.
